This tour offered Andrew and other Australian dealers a unique opportunity to explore Hyundai’s extensive operations, including their world-class manufacturing plants and research facilities.
Highlights of the Trip
Andrew, alongside six other Australian dealers, travelled through South Korea, visiting various Hyundai facilities. The tour provided an insider’s view into how Hyundai leads the industry across multiple sectors.

Hyundai Forklift Factory
Andrew witnessed the impressive assembly line where forklifts are built with a combination of skilled hand labour and advanced technology. Hyundai produces 33 forklifts per day, ensuring each unit is assembled with the utmost care.
The attention to detail was remarkable, with even the smallest tasks, such as applying stickers, done by hand. This personal touch ensures the highest standards are met before each forklift leaves the assembly line.
Hyundai Research and Development Centre
Seeing the innovation firsthand, Andrew was impressed by how Hyundai tests and refines parts and machinery before releasing them to the market. This insight was invaluable, offering a glimpse into the future of forklift technology.
Hyundai Shipyard
As the largest shipbuilder in the world, Hyundai constructs 80 ships annually. Andrew was amazed at the scale of the operation, with 45,000 workers contributing to building ships from the ground up over nine months.
Tour of the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ)
Visiting the DMZ between North and South Korea was a sobering experience. Andrew observed the eerie silence and the absence of wildlife, except for a few rare species that thrive in this heavily guarded area.
Hyundai Motor Studio
This stop gave Andrew a sneak peek into the latest products and technology Hyundai plans to introduce to the global market. The company’s constant push for innovation was evident throughout the tour.
A Visit to the Iconic Lotte Tower
One of the more leisure-oriented highlights of the tour was Andrew’s visit to the Lotte Tower, the tallest building in South Korea and one of the highest skyscrapers in the world. The tower is more than just a stunning architectural marvel; it houses an enormous shopping complex, office spaces, and luxury hotels.
Lotte Tower is the brainchild of a businessman who made his initial fortune selling bubble gum—a fun fact Andrew was surprised to learn. With a panoramic view of the bustling city of Seoul, the observation deck offered a unique perspective on the blend of tradition and modernity that defines South Korea.

Andrew learned a few surprising facts during the tour. Hyundai’s influence in South Korea extends far beyond forklift manufacturing; the company has its hands in almost every sector, from shipbuilding and oil refining to food distribution and even electronics. Hyundai operates an oil refinery and controls 80% of South Korea’s service stations. Andrew was particularly struck by Hyundai’s role in the nation’s infrastructure, with Hyundai vehicles making up 80% of cars on South Korean roads.
