Safety-Focused Technology

How many times have you heard it; someone whinging and carrying on how they didn’t have to worry about all this “Safety Stuff” years ago?

How many times have you heard people complain about the time it adds to “what used to be a simple job” or how it has “just made everything harder”?

And, how many times, have we read in the paper, seen on social media or heard on the radio, that someone – another person – has been seriously injured, or killed, at work?

Just think about that for a second.

Those men and women went to work, signed on for their shift, were doing their job.

They thought they would be going home that night (or morning, depending on the shift). That’s what happens. Day in Day out. Regular. Habitual. Humdrum.

It’s what their family thinks is going to happen as well. Mum or Dad, brother or sister, husband or wife…they’ll be home after their shift.

But not always. Sometimes, they never come home again.

In our industry, we work with – and mitigate against the risk of – danger. Every moment of every day.

During the past couple of decades, but especially in these past 10 years or so, we have made some incredible changes at all levels and tiers of the industry.

Safety is no longer an optional facet of the business you can pay some regard to, in the hope you become an employer of choice and make everyone feel all warm and fuzzy.

New laws, regulations, standards and expectations have been thrust upon businesses like ours and yes it costs, and yes it can be a bit to get our heads around. But if doing this – and tightening our processes and procedures to make sure everyone gets to go home to those they love at the end of the shift, then surely it’s worth it.

I still come across people who whinge because we sell (and are proud to sell, by the way) forklifts with seatbelts.

Seriously. Seatbelts!!!

Anyone knows that the minute you get into a bit of kit that moves around and has any degree of decent mobility, you’re at risk of falling out (and getting runover, too, actually) if you aren’t suitably restrained.

Hyundai Forklifts are among the leaders in their field when it comes to safety-focused technology.

When you stack that up against the stringent safety policies we have at Sirus Mining Solutions, then it wouldn’t be a surprise that we would partner with Hyundai.

At the end of the day, we all want to go home. So, stop whinging and start to be aware of the benefits of a safe and hazard-controlled workplace.

It’s cold comfort to those who have lost their loved-ones, because where an oversight in safety is concerned, any life lost is unnecessary. But if there is such a thing as a consolation in this situation, and we can say, as a result, those people have not died in vain, then it’s that with every single incident, there are investigations done, and measures taken, to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Our industry has come ahead in leaps and bounds since the bad old days of safety.

And it might be a pain in the proverbial at times, but don’t whinge. Just get it right.

Where lives are saved, it has to be worth it.
